A spinning letter wheel for games and lessons

A random letter picker is one of the simplest tools in a teacher’s kit and one of the most useful at a games night. This alphabet wheel gives each letter from A to Z its own slice, so every letter has the same one-in-26 chance on each spin.

How to pick a random letter

  1. Leave the A–Z list as it is, or remove letters you want to skip with the cross next to each one.
  2. Press Spin, or tab to the center of the wheel and press Enter.
  3. Read the letter under the wheel. It is also added to the History tab.
  4. Spin again for the next round.

Word games with an alphabet wheel

Plenty of classic games start with a random letter. Spin the letter picker wheel at the start of each round and let everyone race.

  • Categories: name an animal, a city, a food and a band that all start with the letter.
  • Word chains: each player says a word beginning with the letter within five seconds.
  • Story starters: every sentence of the story must begin with the letter on the wheel.
  • Name game: come up with a made-up superhero whose name starts with the letter.

Letters like Q, X and Z make rounds much harder. Remove them from the list for younger players, or keep them in and allow a pass.

Classroom activities and spelling practice

In early literacy lessons, spin a letter and ask the class for its sound, a word that starts with it and a word that ends with it. For spelling practice, spin a letter and challenge students to spell three words from this week’s list that contain it. Older students can use the wheel to choose a starting letter for vocabulary brainstorms.

  • Edit the list down to the letters you are teaching this week.
  • Use “Edit as text” to add digraphs such as sh, ch and th as their own slices.
  • Turn on remove-winner mode so each letter comes up once in a lesson.

Drawing letters without repeats

By default a letter can come up again on the next spin, just like rolling a die. For a game where each letter should appear only once, turn on remove winner after each spin in Settings. After 26 spins every letter will have been drawn in a random order. Press “Reset this wheel” to start over with A–Z.

For numbers instead of letters, open the number picker wheel. To choose who goes next in a word game, use the name spinner.

Frequently asked questions

Does every letter have the same chance?
Yes. Each of the 26 letters has its own equal slice, and the result is chosen uniformly at random on every spin.
Can I remove letters like Q, X and Z?
Yes. Click the cross next to any letter in the list. Use “Reset this wheel” in Settings to bring the full alphabet back.
Can I use lowercase letters or other alphabets?
Yes. Click “Edit as text”, replace the list with any characters you like, one per line, and click Apply.
Can I spin for a vowel only?
Replace the list with A, E, I, O and U, or keep one copy of each vowel and remove the consonants.
