Random Wheel Generator

Make a wheel of random choices from any list and spin. This page also explains how the result is picked, how to change the odds, and why random results sometimes look surprisingly streaky.

Generate a random wheel from any list

A random wheel generator turns a list into a set of equal slices. Start with the colors on the wheel above, or replace them with anything: restaurants, playlist genres, workout moves, project names. Paste a list and each line becomes a slice; the wheel is generated instantly from what you type.

How the random spinner chooses

When you press Spin, three things happen in order:

  1. The browser’s cryptographic random number generator picks one entry. Every entry has exactly the same chance.
  2. The wheel calculates a final angle that puts the chosen slice under the pointer, with a few full turns before it.
  3. The animation plays, slows down and stops on that slice. The result you see is the result that was picked.

This order matters. On some spinners the animation is random and the result is read from wherever it stops, which can be skewed by rounding or by how the easing works. Here the choice comes first and the random spinner only shows it.

What the odds are

With n entries, each one has a 1 in n chance on every spin. Ten colors means a 10% chance each. The position of an entry on the wheel, its color and the size of its label make no difference.

  • Shuffling changes where slices sit on the wheel. It does not change any entry’s chance.
  • Sorting puts entries in alphabetical order. Again, the odds stay the same.
  • Duplicates do change the odds: an entry that appears three times out of ten slices has a 30% chance.
  • Removing winners shrinks the list, so each remaining entry’s chance goes up after every spin.

Why random results can look unfair

People expect random results to spread out neatly, but real randomness clusters. On a 10-slice wheel, the chance that at least one result repeats within five spins is about 70%. Seeing the same color twice in a row is normal, and so is waiting a long time for a particular slice.

If you want everyone or everything to come up evenly, randomness alone is the wrong tool. Turn on remove-winner mode instead: you still get a random order, but each entry appears exactly once before the wheel is empty.

Frequently asked questions

Is this random wheel truly random?
It uses crypto.getRandomValues, the browser’s cryptographic random number source, with rejection sampling so every entry has an exactly equal chance. That is more than enough for games, classrooms and everyday decisions.
Can I make a weighted random wheel?
Yes. Add an entry more than once. Each copy is its own slice, so three copies are three times as likely as one.
Does shuffling make the wheel more random?
No. Shuffling only rearranges the slices. Each entry’s chance stays exactly the same.
Is the result decided before the wheel stops?
Yes. The result is chosen when you press Spin, and the animation is calculated to land on it. This keeps the result fair and the animation consistent with what is recorded.
